Here's a few things to know about how tribes work, as well as how they handle their territory!
LEADERS:
Every tribe has a leader. The leader is chosen many different ways depending on the nature of his/her tribe. This can range from voting, to contest, or just who happens to be the toughest and scariest of the lot so that no one challenges him/her. The leader gets to get first choice of everything, whether it be food, furniture, mates, etc. Despite how unfair this is, it’s somewhat an unwritten Bartholian law, and no one has really questioned it or have ever been against it. Don’t like it? Challenge your leader for the ruling spot!
NOTE: Leaders are usually male, but can be female. It’s just very rare, especially since there are more males than females in the Bartholian population.
MATES:
Bartholians are a lot like animals, especially when choosing a mate. There are about three kinds of mating habits amongst tribes. This, much like the leader, depends on the nature of the tribe.
- Free love tribe: Some tribes are open enough to share mates, in free love style. A guy could have three girls, she could have three guys besides him, and maybe one of those guys could have a few girls and maybe even a guy of his own. It’s free for all, and no one objects it.
- Territorial/aggressive tribe: Some, however, may be territorial. They pick their lovers forcefully, and keep them exclusively. This goes for male and female tribe members, neither sex is really dominant. It all depends on the person, really, who chooses the mate. Either way, they treat their mate sort of like their territory, and can be challenged for ownership of said mate.
- Traditional tribe: They function like most people do in a normal society. They have one mate found the traditional way, and usually don’t share them, but give them the choice of leaving. ‘Nuff said.
NOTE: No matter what kind of mating habit’s a tribe has, whichever mate(s) the leader chooses often become exclusive to him/her only, unless they say otherwise.
SPAWNING:
Bartholians find spawning very important. They like having kids, and lots of them. The more there is of them to go around, the better. Makes them feel superior. A lot of times tribes will consist of families alone. Inbreeding is even okay amongst most tribes, though not all. Don’t give me that look…I SAID they were like animals…
RANKS:
Tribes, though usually full of tons of members, tend to have a few main ranks that the leader chooses over a period of time. The leader will often have a person to fill the following ranks…
- Second in command: They’re sort of like the sub-leader. They tend to handle the situations the leader doesn’t find worth their time. They also help when the leader feels overwhelmed.
- Fighter: This person is the toughest of the bunch, and usually the craziest. They will take on anyone at any time if it means defending their leader or their territory, no matter how great the challenge. They tend to rank very high, due to this. Wouldn’t you highly respect a person willing to die for you for a stupid cause?
- Brains: This one is the smartest of the tribe, and much loved by the leader, because they can strategize while the fighter’s out knocking heads. They tend to slink around getting inside information and blackmail for the leader, which can come in handy when your fighter’s down, or you just don’t wanna get your hands dirty.
- Medic: With all those territorial jerks running around, someone’s bound to get hurt! Medics are great for this. They’re a little scary, because they normally don’t have real medical training or the proper tools. They tend to be very clever because of this though, and can actually fix you up pretty great. Their medical supplies often consist of stolen or black-marketed items.
- Brawn: This person is, as you can imagine, the strongest of the tribe. They spend most of their time helping moving or carrying heavy objects, or restraining anyone who may be try to harm anyone in their tribe. They’re great for building new monuments and shelter and such, as well as carrying heavy cargo back to their tribe. IF you don’t wanna totally annihilate an enemy for whatever reason, a huge strong person holding them down can be a good thing too. Great for interrogating!
- Scout: the scout of the tribe is like their little spy. They go into territories alone, sneaking around and gathering important information on it such as whether it's safe to enter or not. As they are scouting out good location and information, they are simply called "scouts".
CODE NAMES:
While names in Bartholomew are illegal, somehow code names get past the system. It is mainly because they are not real names that anyone takes on, but simply code words their rivals make up for them. It starts with something like, "You take the fat one, I'll get the red head" and it just evolves from their. Next thing you know, rivals often refer to their chosen enemies by these names and know who to target from such. Almost every Bartholian has a code name because if this, and normally do not like the ones their rivals have chosen for them.
Code names normally start with the word "the" and are followed by a word or so based on a physical appearance, such as "the half-pint" or "the greenie" though it can sometimes extend to personality such as "the smartie" or "the loudmouth". It all depends on how observant the tribes are with one another.
RIVALS:
I probably should have mentioned this before the code names, but as they go somewhat with the ranks, I will just mention it underneath it. Anyway, for every tribe there will more than likely be a rival tribe. In fact, it can safely be assure that for every tribe there IS a rival tribe, no exceptions. That being said, a tribe will find itself in a strange bond with their rivals.
That is to say, they will more often than not be locked in infinite battle with said rivals and never actually allow one another to be officially beaten. This is not because they care for the rivals themselves, per se, but the love of the rivalry between them. Without a rival, a Bartholian pretty much has nothing more to live for.
Platonic hate-love is not uncommon with Bartholians though. More often than not, one tribe member will target a rival member very similar to themselves (like a brain targeting the other brain and the fighter targeting his fellow rival fighter, etc.). Every so often, this may even evolves into romantic hate-love between these targeted rivals, even against the individual's sexual orientation, but this is not always so.
The point is, there will always be a rival, and they will always care for each other greatly, even if it's through extreme hate.
